The school supports the South Gloucestershire Council policy statement on Equal Opportunities and implements the appropriate guidelines within the school.  In general the school makes every effort to ensure that equal opportunities for all children are observed during the whole range of school activities, regardless of gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability or race (see ‘protected characteristics’ Equalities Act 2010).  This means in effect that children have an equal opportunity in taking part in everything that goes on in the school.

Racial Harassment

The school supports the South Gloucestershire LA policy statement on Racial Harassment and implements the appropriate guidelines within the school. In general the policy states that "South Gloucestershire Council will not tolerate racial harassment of its employees or people using its services by anyone". It needs to be understood by pupils and parents that racial abuse and similar behaviour will be treated as serious offences. Any incidents of abuse/ harassment should be notified to the Head as soon as possible, where appropriate action will be taken, in association with our behaviour and discipline policy.

Child Protection

All staff are instructed to report any suspicions to the head teacher, who is required under the procedures to alert the Social Services Department, about possible child abuse or neglect.   Parents will be consulted first, unless this may be perceived to put children at risk.   The school follows clear safeguarding procedures, including CRB checks, to ensure suitable adults work with the children.

Special Educational Needs

The school has a positive attitude towards children of all abilities, and the members of staff are firmly committed to meeting individual needs of all pupils at all levels. We have a clear and effective policy, which is well managed within the school, enabling a speedy response and appropriate action to be taken.

The school follows national guidance for the SEN Code of Practice.

The focus at all times will be to support the children as they progress through the school, and we acknowledge the importance of a negotiated partnership between parents, pupils and professionals. We have a member of staff (Mrs Morgan-McDaid) who, as Special Needs Co-ordinator, has responsibility for co-ordinating work with children who have special educational needs, at ‘school action +’ or statemented level. Mrs Sharp has the role of ‘Inclusion manager’, monitoring the provision for children in need of support, at ‘school action’ level. Other members of staff (teaching & support staff) are employed, as appropriate, to give the necessary support.

Appropriate Individual Education Plans are drawn up and implemented for children who have special educational needs. For children who have a "Statement of Special Educational Needs" we follow the approved LA guidelines, providing as much appropriate support as possible.
