The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum, which gives the children many excellent educational opportunities to develop as they move through the junior stage of their education.  As a school we firmly believe in the value of educating the whole child so that every child will feel competent and confident in the challenging world he/she will enter in later years. Our efforts at Raysfield will aim to develop all aspects of appropriate child development, which will include - academic, social, emotional, moral and physical growth.

Each class teacher is responsible for organising and 'delivering' the appropriate teaching programmes and the children remain with this teacher for most curriculum activities during the school year.  Some specialist teaching may take place (eg. Music/Games/IT/RE) and there are appropriate teacher swaps to ensure that this works well.  There will be a mix of subject specific teaching and of integrating subjects into topics, with a ‘WOW’ beginning, leading to a celebration event at the end.

There is a policy for all the curriculum subject areas and a copy of these can be found on the Information page of the website.  Rather than repeat them in full here, we have included a major aim from each curriculum area:

English:

To encourage children to be confident readers, writers and speakers who are able to enjoy using a variety of language skills. We use the Read, Write Inc Spelling scheme, teaching phonics throughout the key stage and this is then built upon in teaching other letter patterns, from the National Curriculum 2014.

Mathematics:

To enjoy and be excited about the magic of maths; to become confident in using numbers to solve problems in everyday life.

Science:

We aim to stimulate and excite pupils' curiosity about the world around us. Children's imagination and curiosity is stretched so that can learn through captivating activities and investigations about the way the universe works, as far as we know it.

ICT

We aim to make children computer literate, confident to use ICT (including the Internet) as an important tool for learning in a technological age. We aim for children to learn to use technology safely, with good awareness of risks.

RE:

We encourage respect and understanding for all faiths and their practices. We aim to provide children with the skills needed both to learn about religion and to learn from religion.

Geography:

We want the children to be amazed and interested by the wonders of the natural world and to understand that they are part of a global village. We aim for children to understand the impact of human choices on our natural environment.

History:

We aim to develop a fascination and appreciation of life in the past and to reflect on similarities to our lifestyle today.

MFL:

We wish for the children to experience learning another language and understanding another culture (Spanish), to develop skills to communicate in our global community and a love of learning.

Design and Technology:

Creating things is hugely exciting an inventive, fun activity. In Design and Technology we aim to let the children become innovators, where they develop confidence to express their ideas, learning to think and intervene creatively. They gain valuable skills whilst making a range of products and systems, designing for life.

PE:

We encourage children to enjoy sport. We engender a positive attitude towards health and fitness, create opportunities for our future sporting stars and enjoyment of sport / team games.

Music:

Creating, performing and listening to music is a powerful form of communication. We give children the opportunity to experience and gain expertise in a variety of forms of music, for their own enjoyment and the pleasure of others.

PSHE and Citizenship:

We want children to be tolerant, respectful and caring young people who are confident in themselves and accepting of the differences of others.

Art:

We aim to help children to enjoy and develop their creative skills. We provide opportunities to use a variety of media and to appreciate the work of others, through a range of stimulating, fun activities.

Sex Education

We provide a course of work which gives the children an understanding of the broad nature of sex education. The work is suitably matched to individual development and is appropriate to age and ability. We aim to help the children understand the functions of their own bodies and those of the opposite sex, in an appropriate manner, and to provide opportunities for discussion about personal development with particular reference to growing up and relationships.

SEN

We will provide the environment and support whereby children with special educational needs develop to their full potential and experience the same opportunities as their peers. In many cases, a focus upon the whole child enables us to recognise and celebrate strengths in children who may find access to the curriculum difficult, through speech, language, literacy, numeracy or physical needs. The school has a wide range of intervention to help children in need of support. It also aims to create dyslexic friendly learning, with awareness of the needs of children with dyslexia.
