RAYSFIELD JUNIOR SCHOOL

Assessment systems have changed and from September 2015 there are no longer levels to report. Instead children are being assessed according to their age related expectation (ARE) in relation to the Curriculum 2014. This fundamental change has had huge implications for systems and processes for assessing and reporting pupil progress and attainment.

Parents Guide to the New National Curriculum
In order to help parents understand ‘Life without Levels’ a series of parent information evenings have been planned. Please find the link below which will provide the information shared at the first meeting in November 2015.
Parent Assessment Powerpoint Nov 2015
The key principles for assessment that underpin the school’s policy remain unchanged and the link below clarifies the Raysfield Schools’ assessment principles.
Our assessment policy clarifies the systems and processes that are followed and includes what the schools do in terms of ongoing and formal assessments. Please find the link to our assessment policy below.
The AREs in writing and maths have been mapped into assessment grids which are stuck into the back of childrens’ books. These are used by the teachers to help assess progress against learning objectives. Children can now look at these grids and this helps to support self assessment and goal setting. These grids can also be viewed by parents and used as a way of seeing how well their child is progressing.

Written Reports
Reports are issued annually and appropriate comments are made which reflect the achievements of the child and targets set for the following term. Parents and children are also invited to comment on progress.
SATS
In Year 6 the children currently take the national KS2 SATS tests in English, Maths and Science. Along with Teacher Assessments, these are a reflection of your child’s level of attainment in these subjects, as well as their progress during their time at Raysfield Junior School.
As a school we value the whole child and hope that all children will develop not just academically but socially, emotionally, morally and physically. Many of these qualities are life skills and unable to be tested so easily.
Past results:
In 2010, many schools, including ourselves, boycotted national SATs, but used past papers, externally moderated, in order to give accurate levels for the children. Good progress and attainment were shown, above 80% level 4 and over 30% level 5.
Ofsted 2010 found "Attainment has risen strongly across the school. Detailed school assessment data indicate that Year 6 attainment moved above average in 2010, and that pupils are currently ahead of age-related expectations for all year groups. Pupils’ progress has improved sharply. Inspection evidence confirms this bright picture."
2011 continued progress in the number of children achieving age related expectations at level 4 or above; now consistently around 90%.
Ofsted nov 2011, “Pupils’ progress, which was satisfactory at the time of the last inspection, has also improved and is now good in all year groups.”
2012 further demonstrated consistently good standards of achievement, above the national average, with significant improvements again in those achieving above expectations (with 5% even achieving level 6 in maths!).
